Whether you like it or not, the holiday season has officially begun. From department stores to your local Starbucks, the seasonal décor is enough to make you forget it is only the start of November. Well it may seem eager, these next couple weeks are the best time jump into your own holiday prep and get your home decorated. You will thank yourself for getting this crossed off your list before December hits and the holiday hustle and bustle really kick into high gear.
We have put together our top four tips for taking on the task of getting your home ready for the holidays.
- Keep it simple. There is a huge difference between décor and clutter. You don’t need to cover every surface of your home with holiday cheer. The best rule to follow is for every item you bring out of storage, a non-seasonal display item goes into storage for the holidays.
- Pick a colour scheme and stick to it. This is not to say you are stuck coating your home in the standard red and green palate. There are many more colour options that will still make your home sparkle during the holidays, such as ice blue or silver. Walk the isles of a large department store and get an idea of what the “in” colours are for this holiday season. Whatever you decide on, keep it consistent throughout your entire home.
- Bring the outside in. Decorating for the holidays offers tons of opportunity for you to go into your own yard and take advantage of the free decorations created by nature. From leaves to pinecones, it all can come in. These items make perfect centerpieces and mantle toppers, whether they are spray painted to match your colour scheme or left in their natural state.
- Give your future self a break. The least cheery part of the holidays is the process of packing up when it is all over. While it is easy to just throw everything in boxes and be done with it, you won’t be happy with yourself when next year’s season starts up. Put some care into labeling all of your boxes clearly, creating an organized system, and wrapping your lights in a way that won’t require 4 hours of untangling next year. It will be worth it.
A few simple things will take the stress away from the task of decorating for the holidays. Remember, even if you’re not ready for the holidays, your home can be!
